Combining one of Tasmania’s natural icons with one of Tasmania’s cultural icons, with the comfort and convenience of the TAA seaplane.
Board your seaplane from the Hobart waterfront and motor into the Derwent River. During this water taxi your pilot will point out items of historical interest. You will be treated to wonderful views of the city of Hobart with Mt Wellington as the backdrop.
Taking off from the Derwent River you’ll leave Hobart as your seaplane flies east with the summit of Mt Wellington behind you. Your pilot will level the aircraft at a smooth flying altitude and will update you on geographical and historical points of interest as you fly. Within twenty minutes you will cross the East Coast of Tasmania and enjoy views of Maria Island National Park.
Shortly after Maria Island you will see the red granite rock of Schouten Island, which lies off the Southern tip of the Freycinet Peninsula. Cruising north along the eastern side of the Freycinet Peninsula, you will be treated to some of the World’s most pristine coastline with striking red granite, aqua blue water and white sandy beaches. Get your camera ready because here comes Wineglass Bay! From the air you will have no trouble making out the distinctive shape of this iconic beach.
Descending gently past Mt Amos and the Hazards Mountains, your pilot will bring you in for a smooth water landing at Hazards Beach on the Freycinet Peninsula, where you will be able to see the white sand through the crystal clear water. Your pilot will beach the seaplane at Hazards Beach, where you can disembark and enjoy drink and snacks, provided by TAA ( beaching the seaplane is weather dependent).
45 minutes later, after another exhilarating water take-off, land back on the Derwent River and taxi to MONA.
You will be greeted by MONA staff and taken by buggy to The Source Restaurant to enjoy a three-course lunch. Executive chef, Philippe Leban, will tailor lunch to your taste and dietary needs. A sommelier is also on hand to match each course with fine wine from Moorilla and around the world. (Optional: matching wines can be purchased $50 p/p).
After lunch you are free to explore the museum.
Return to Hobart onboard the MONA ferry or MONA ROMA coach.
Note: As the Freycinet Peninsula is a designated remote area, passengers should bring a hat, sunscreen and water bottle, which are all available at passenger check-in. The aircraft will be beaching, please consider your clothing, footwear and bring a small towel.
Opening hours Wed-Mon 10am – 6pm (closed Tuesdays) – Open 7 days in January
Seeing Wineglass Bay from the air is an unforgettable experience. Its characteristic shape, the clear blue water and the red granite rock of the Hazards Mountains all make this a spectacular sight. Follow this with a seaplane landing near Hazards Beach and your pilot beaching the aircraft for a walk on shore. Not a bad start to your day!
After arriving at MONA in style in the TAA seaplane, MONA staff will take you to The Source to enjoy lunch. The Source at MONA is renowned for its French-inspired dining, courtesy of Chef Phillipe Leban and its spectacular wine list. This package can be upgraded to include paired wines.
The Museum of Old and New Art is like nothing else on this planet. It will challenge you, confront you, please you and shock you but you can be assured that this spectacular building and arrangement of art will leave you wanting to know more about MONA. Take your time and enjoy everything it has to offer.
After your time at MONA, you will board the MR-1 fast ferry to make your way back to the Hobart waterfront. Alternatively, the MONA ROMA coach service is also available as part of this package. Kick back on the ferry and enjoy Hobart and the Derwent River from yet another stunning perspective.
