No visit to Hobart is complete without seeing it from the air. Flying in the TAA Seaplane is the most convenient aviation experience available to any visitor to Hobart.
See Hobart city from a new perspective – a truly unique experience! Board your seaplane at the Hobart waterfront and motor gently out into the River Derwent to begin the Hobart city scenic seaplane tour. During this water taxi your pilot will point out items of interest.
Taking off from the Derwent River , it is hard not be awed as beautiful Hobart unveils itself beneath you and Mount Wellington sits as your backdrop.
You will be treated to wonderful views of the Tasman Bridge, Government House, Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and the city of Hobart as you take off. Continuing towards the mouth of the Derwent River, take in views of Kingston Beach, Blackmans Bay and South Arm.
Northern Bruny Island will shortly come into view as well as the D’entrecasteaux Channel, a favourite sailing passage for the local boating community. If you are lucky you may spot a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins or maybe even a migrating whale! Further away lies Storm Bay, the Tasman Peninsula and expanse of the Southern Ocean. After passing the South Arm and Opossum Bay, you return for another view of Hobart and its historic waterfront before descending to land once more on the Derwent River. Arriving back at the TAA seaplane dock with your Hobart scenic tour complete, we know you will have the seaplane bug and your pilot will only be too pleased to share with you, our many seaplane experiences available.
There are few cities as spectacular as Hobart from the air. Within only a few minutes of take-off from the Derwent River, expect to gain an appreciation for just how scenic this harbour city is.
Hobart is a maritime city that has relied on its natural harbour for trade and recreations since it was settled. As you fly south, the expanse of the Derwent River is evident from the sky, as it empties into the Southern Ocean. There’s no better way to grasp an understanding of this area than from a seaplane.
Keep your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins on this tour. Dolphins are a common sight in and around the Derwent River and are generally easy to spot from the TAA seaplane. Likewise, whales are easily spotted from the air and during the spring months, are also relatively common.
At your furthest point from the Hobart waterfront, you’ll be just over the northern end of Bruny Island. Dennes Point is the northern tip of Bruny Island and is home to beautiful beaches and a wonderful little cafe and art gallery. In fact, you can fly there in the TAA seaplane on your next tour! At this stage of the Hobart City Scenic tour, you’ll enjoy excellent views over Bruny Island as your pilot turns the seaplane and commences the return to Hobart.
